That place on earth where flowers bloom on ice
is a paradise for dreamers. That place on earth
we almost met is a cul de sac for lovers.
I took my breaths deeply then, now I can breathe
in increments. I could have been a mermaid if
I loved to swim
but staring at the ocean
is my favorite other place on earth
and all my dreams come true
when I take in its beauty
look up at the sky stoned
on the afternoon’s delight.
In my parent’s village
my cousin with the exact same name
dragged me out the window
as we avoided the chickens
to run fast.
Her boyfriend drove so fast down the mountain
I thought my lamb and potatoes
would leave a mark in his car.
His friend kept touching my shoulder
for the past week.
He had these dark eyes
but his soul looked empty.
He said I was a beautiful Americana
I said I was Canadian
(for the tenth time)
I rolled my eyes
woke up from the bullshit lies
and walked back to my aunt’s house.
Where are you going? my cousin
shouted out of the car window.
For a walk in the mountain, I replied.
I was only thirteen.

Christina, it’s simply brilliant and an ode to those days of rebellion, angst again the world and fantasy. The romantic epoch of growing up:)
