DECADES OF ART
I can lie like a jazz singer
on a sultry bed
in a torrid nightclub.
It’s the 20s sliding inside humid
I am a little girl, wonderfully sacred
and scared of consequences.
Nothing can be wrapped up as perfectly
as pink bodies, naked in the daylight
wet and sweltering on wrinkled sheets,
whispering red sweet secrets, like candy
on sky blue Sunday mornings.
I lie on the grass after a music festival
free from law, handcuffs
rules. It’s the 70s
and we made it
out alive. We saw Jim, Jimmy,
Janet at the hotel. Patti was doing
a poetry reading in NYC.
We were the best observers and
the weakest artists,
This poem was first published in Neon Mariposa Magazine, in Jauary, 2019. The version I posted today is the edited one. I worked for years on these poems with my editor, Alexandra Meehan, to get them just perfect. Editing a poem is not easy. This is the first time in my life I had my poems edited and I learned so much about myself as a writer. I hope you enjoy this poem, there are another hundred or so in my book, Love & Metaxa.
Marisa Silva-Dunbar is the editor of Neon Mariposa Magazine. Marisa Silva-Dunbar is a Pushcart nominated poet; Marisa is the founder and EIC of Neon Mariposa Magazine. She wrote this wonderful blurb for Love & Metaxa:
“Christina Strigas’s Love & Metaxa is a collection you will want to read and savor multiple times. Her poems are hauntingly beautiful, with elements of nostalgia, and erotica. In her poem White Cell Counts she seduces the reader by appealing to our senses, with stanzas like “From your smile, /Our skin turns wet now/Honeysuckle entangles our bodies.” Her imagery is powerful, and there are times throughout the collection one can’t help but feel they are on the precipice of danger. Love & Metaxa is thoroughly enchanting.”
