Coffeehouse Love

Ray Lamontagne’s voice is so distinct

I pick it off before the twenty-year old barista can

as distinct or obnoxious as this province

has come to be.

Quebec left the map of Canada

long before Bill 101 destroyed it.

Caffe latte has a flower when you sit

down to enjoy it

if not, the lids don’t fit.

Spring has a breeze

but I forgot my jacket in the car

to feel it tingle my nipples.

Second floor is darker

while the first floor

is as lonely

as a cactus in the desert.

You still need my arms

I need your strong shoulder

and yours is the perfect fit

for my head

to hold me up.

It feels as if knowledge

is dangerous

and thinking leaves

me powerless.

Intelligence is not made

or enacted, or practiced

it just is.

I am where you were

last night,

waiting for the wrong meeting

of the minds

the one that happened once

in another lifetime.

My sentiment was forgotten

when I saw you.

      1. He is.:) His voice melts like butter, or a fine wine. I can’t believe I’d never heard him (or of him,) before. Wait, yes I can. I live under a rock. I’ll check out “Trouble.” Thank you. I love Socrates! I’m glad he helped inspire you to write this poem.

  1. First off, I want thank you for introducing me to the soothing-and distinctive, indeed– sound of Ray LaMontagne.:) I love it!!

Having said that, the following hits me the most:

    “It feels as if knowledge

    is dangerous

    and thinking leaves

    me powerless.

    Intelligence is not made

    or enacted, or practiced

    it just is.”

    1. yup, Ray is quite the soul stirrer. Especially the song Trouble. He is incredible.
As for that part of the poem, grateful you appreciate that, I was thinking of Socrates and ignorance is bliss quote and somehow it spun off into my head like that and then this cool recent conversation about intelligence that I had with myself to try to grasp what someone was trying to tell me in an offhand way brought me to that conclusion, that no matter how hard you try, you are either intelligent or you are not. 🙂
