Misunderstand me

December 2, 2015

You told me I was wrong

to all my rights

as I stared at tombstones

read ancient Greek adages

rolled in limousines

to graveyards and churches

but funerals are exactly like weddings

do not fool yourself

death and love

are interchangeable.

Wear black for white

white for black

only my mom is left now.

Coffin upon coffin of years

scan pictures to lost villages

escape time with movie star poses

kiss strangers into friends.

Drink shots of Metaxa and Greek coffee

for six days straight

and still the pain is not numb

it is all a farce

this life.

Our bodies cold

with painted lips and

pretty dresses

or suits

to make a new home

stare at endings

make new beginnings.

late night philosophical quests

of broken dreams

unedited manuscripts.

Always doing what we could

to be understood

but all I want to do

is be

misunderstood.

Bury me with my books of poetry

I joke

but I am dead serious.

  1. Bravo, bravo. You have taken your writing to a whole new level, a place I and mere mortals can only dream of – greatness. The delicious contradiction in the first two lines set the tone. “but funerals are exactly like weddings.” I am afraid only you could write those words. You cleverly followed that with your black for white exchange. Ah, what wonderful writing. I am afraid to tell you this may be your masterpiece, because I don’t want to inhibit any future works. I really wish I wrote this amazing piece. and I am DEAD SERIOUS.

Thank you so much Andrew! You are too kind, the truth is when you have been a close part of three members of my family dying so close together and my day a few years ago, you realize, that it is an art to create a perfect funeral. sadly. but it’s the truth, thank you again for reading…

      1. I have read that the greatest writers and work of writing all were born through pain. You have demonstrated that with this lovely work. I have experienced this loss as well. I truly hope there is an afterlife so our families can enjoy our successes down here. Maybe when we get there, you can be kind enough to introduce me to your loved ones. My heart goes out to you.

  9. Similar to a drawing or the photograph of a master, one of the keys to artistry is juxtaposing light and darkness, highlight and shadow. You have done so her with words that are haunting, lyrical and dripping with truth
